This project is an experiment in the collaborative production of image, sound and sculpture. We started with a series of simple rules:
1. Use only one colour.
2. Create all works in situ – this includes sound.
3. Document the progress of the work as often as possible.
All work is the result of five days of collaboration under these conditions – there was no other form of pre-meditation. The sounds you hear were all generated by manipulating recordings made as the work was produced. These include the sound of the typewriter, crushing chalk in a pestle and mortar, Clifford Sage beatboxing as he worked in the adjacent space, and wiping the blackboard with newsprint.
We documented the process using photography, film and keeping a typewritten journal.
As the work developed, it became increasingly important to refine the images.
We soon realized that we were working on a series of basic, graphic images that, taken as a whole, could be read as a kind of visual alphabet. The work was created in a spirit of play and learning-as-we-went, therefore this idea reflects the spirit in which it was produced.
The project was very much focussed on the process of collaboration and mutual exploration, and we consider this show to be a staring point for future work.
